Obituary for Rev. Barbara Jane Price

Barbara Jane Price, age 74, passed away on October 08, 2020, in Lexington, TN.

Barbara was born on December 12, 1945, in Kansas City, Missouri to her late parents John Gerald and Marguerite Lillian Jones Price.

Barb grew up in Kansas City, KS, attending elementary school and graduated from Shawnee Mission North in 1974. Barb's primary focus in life was family. She lived with her grandmother Jones, uncle "Unc", mother, and her two older brothers. Her family encouraged her to look for God's direction in her life. Her Grandmother Jones instilled within her that God loved her greatly and is always present. Barb joined the Methodist Church on March 30, 1958.

God was her greatest love. Through her thirties, she studied and was accepted and ordained by the United Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches in Kansas City, MO. She became the Minister of Counseling for Spirit of Hope, MCC-KC. Barb enjoyed serving whether it be teaching, officiating weddings, funerals, and occasionally preaching. She would describe herself as a "worker bee".

After moving to the Nashville area, she began assisting in monthly preaching with a small UCC (United Church of Christ) congregation in Cookeville, TN. Later, she assisted in preaching in a congregation in Parkers Cross Roads. The congregation joined the UCC becoming Phoenix Christian Church, UCC.

Barb valued education and attended Pittsburg State Teachers College in Pittsburg, KS for her first year of college. She went on to complete her undergraduate education, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from Lewis and Clark College, Portland, OR in 1968. Following, she completed her Master of Education degree through the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1971.

Barbs main years of secular work was with the State of Missouri in Kansas City, working in various positions but finding her strength and direction in substance abuse counseling ending as Director of the Chemical Free Program of the clinic. She retired from the State of Missouri in 2000. Barb loved her work in experiencing the changes, growth, and success of individuals who she would say were her heroes fighting a hard addiction battle.

Outside of her work, she loved traveling, nature, camping in pop-up campers, and then into RVs as she progressed with age. She found long-lasting friendships with biannual gatherings in a group of likeminded campers dubbed the CEOS (Camping Eases [or Energizes] Our Souls).

She was very musically talented and learned the gift of playing guitar, ukulele, trumpet, and the French horn. Barb loved Girl Scouts where she found friends and developed leadership skills. She was a lifetime patriot.

Barb also had an unwavering love for dogs, cats, and horses. She always had at least two or three dogs throughout her adult life.

Preceded in death by her mother: Marguerite Lillian (Jones) Price, (Buried in Pittsburg, KS; died Kansas City, MO.); father: John Gerald Price of Las Vegas, NV; brother: John (Donnie) Price of Lenexa, KS; Grandparents Price and Jones all of Pittsburg, KS; Jimmy Hurtig; and Nancy (Hurtig) Bolin of KS.

Barbara leaves behind her loving spouse of 41 years (married Jan 27, 2014, in Iowa), Jane Hurtig; brother: Gerald "Jerry" (Julie) Price; Thomas (Edith) Hurtig; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews; and loving and supportive extended family and dear friends throughout her lifetime.

The family would like to thank: Paige, LPN, and staff of Elmcroft of Jackson Memory Care; AHC facilities in Savannah and Lexington, TN; Reverends: Marsha Brown, Phoenix Christian Church; John Barboni, retired UFMCC minister; Mark Pridmore, Hospice Chaplin in Kansas City; and TN Quality Hospice Chaplains Eaton and Dennis.
